The scrapblog of a theological noncognitivist.
Normally Family Guy is brilliant, but here they really dropped the ball. The 9/11 attackers were motivated by three things: the American occupation of Saudi Arabia that started after Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait; America's sanctions regime against Iraq and no-fly zones over the country; and the intifada in Israel, which at the time was being supported principally by Saddam Hussein in the form of bounties to Palestinian suicide-bombers via the Arab Defence League. Whichever way you look at it, none of the 9/11 hijackers was Afghan, their political ideology had nothing to do with Afghanistan, and the 9/11 attacks had all been planned in Hamburg - not in Afghanistan. After 9/11 every government in the world - including the Palestinian Authority, including Iran, and including the Taleban - condemned the attacks. The only government that didn't was, indeed, Saddam Hussein's Iraq.Quite why back in 2001 attacking Afghanistan was thought to be a good idea, whereas sorting out the mess in the Middle East that had actually led to 9/11 - and which had been caused by the American Right's decision to keep Saddam in power in 1991 - was judged to be a bad idea - including by the mainstream European Left! - is one of the abiding mysteries of the twenty-first century.
